Celebrate National Day in the region and take part in one of the many events taking place in the towns of Northern Vaud. From Yverdon-les-Bains to Arnex-sur-Orbe, through the alpine pastures and along the shores of Lake Grandson, enjoy a wide variety of options for a fun-filled time on August 1.
In Orbe and Arnex-sur-Orbe, everyone is pulling out all the stops for National Day. On Friday, July 31, the town of Orbe is hosting a variety of events at Le Puisoir starting in the early evening. With music, bell ringers, and an official ceremony, Orbe offers the perfect way to kick off the weekend. The next day, the festivities continue at the Giron du Nord, the iconic summer festival of Northern Vaud. On the festival grounds, the official ceremony, concerts, and a lively atmosphere will create a warm and festive experience to celebrate August 1. A free shuttle service will run between Orbe (Post Office) and Arnex-sur-Orbe (Giron) from 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. It’s the perfect way to enjoy the festivities without worrying about transportation.
If you head up a bit in Sainte-Croix, you can enjoy a dinner-and-show as part of the Rupicapra Festival. With comedians Nathalie Devantey, Benjamin Décosterd, Nathanaël Rochat, and mentalist Gabriel Tornay, the evening is sure to be entertaining. Registration is required.
And if you’d like to treat yourself on this national holiday, the Brasserie du Châtelard in Treycovagnes is offering a menu featuring Switzerland’s signature dishes, with a few twists that are sure to delight your taste buds. This special menu is available for both lunch and dinner.
On August 1st, the region’s alpine chalets are often prized for their natural setting, simplicity and friendly atmosphere.
In Ballaigues, the Chalet des Cernys offers a raclette carousel (5 kinds of cheese, each one as delicious as the next).
A little further along the Jura, Le Suchet and its iconic Chalet du Suchet welcomes visitors to enjoy a fondue before taking in the panoramic view of the canton. It’s a prime spot for watching the various fireworks displays set off in the valley—if there are any this year.
Finally, at theAuberge des Gélinottes, enjoy a National Day celebration filled with good cheer: a pétanque tournament, a friendly buffet, and a full moon party. Everything is in place for an unforgettable August 1st just a stone’s throw from Mont Aubert, above Concise.
Be sure to make a reservation, no matter which chalet you’re visiting, since the chalets and alpine snack bars are very popular during this time of year.

A little further along the shores of Lake Neuchâtel, in Yvonand, you’ll find a lively day of activities on the Pré de l’Hôtel de Ville. With the Women’s Tour de France passing through town and a performance by the Corps de Musique, it promises to be a fun day for the Tapa-Sabllias (the name for Yvonand’s residents).
